In the company of geniuses v 2.0

In the company of geniuses v 2.0

In the spirit of May being Mental Health Awareness Month enjoy my video from 2014, “In the company of geniuses”. The following short film (18 minutes +/-) is about famous people with a mental illness and how our schools, our teachers, our textbooks failed to mention the connection between their illness of bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia… and their groundbreaking achievements and breakthroughs to generations of American children that later created a false impression and a stigma for those diagnosed with a mental illness. Rather than appreciate the mentally ill or have empathy for them, to often there’s fear and hate for this misunderstood group. All my videos and essays can be viewed on my websites – www.tedburnett.com and...

The Second Live Oak Forum (October 2016): Opening Remarks

The Second Live Oak Forum (October 2016): Opening Remarks

Opening Remarks: Good morning and welcome to The SECOND!! Live Oak Forum. (Can we get a round of applause?) My name is Ted Burnett and I am the Founder, the Event Organizer of this Forum and today’s Master of Ceremonies. Let me take a minute to restate why I’m here at this event, once again. I’ve spent the past 27 years of my life seeing the value of personal growth through facing my own fears and problems (both, large and small) while pursuing many opportunities that came my way. Both, the problems and the opportunities, have taught me powerful life lessons while I slowly grew towards the truth and wisdom. I believe we face a crisis. Our society is stuck at the highest levels in Washington with the inability of our government to work together to solve our many...

No Pain, No Gain

No Pain, No Gain

September 17, 2015 No Pain, No Gain By Ted Burnett There is no coming to consciousness without pain. – Carl Jung, 1875-1961 Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist I’ve spent my entire life, all 44 years, living with alcoholics and drug addicts, their families and friends. As a child, I played with them in the neighborhood and later I partied with them on Friday nights. I went to school and to college with them. I even worked with them. As an addict, I grew up seeking the next big thrill while trying to avoid pain, at all cost. I’ve watched a few including myself find “sobriety” while some were incarcerated repeatedly and others went to their grave a bit too soon. Among the group was my own father, at the age of 53. This Vietnam Veteran, like many, died penniless...
